Chicago

How did you find out about the eda?
Invitation to the Chicago Combine by Marcus Nettles and Earnest Horton. Marcus Nettles has known me since I was about 9years old. I've attended his camp for the Marcus Nettles Project, which he organizes each year, and since then, he has continued to check in on me and my development. Coach E, since I was about 7, he was one of my first travel baseball coaches and continues to see me develop and grow as a player on the field and into the young man I've been becoming over the years when I played with him on JEM and now with the White Sox Ace program.
WHAT DOES THE EDA OPPORTUNITY MEAN TO YOU?
This scholarship means a great deal to me because it now gives me a better chance to showcase my talent and grit to more people. I also get to show them what they have been missing out on too. I have a lot to prove, and being capable of holding my own despite my smaller frame as a catcher and coming from a single-mom household. This scholarship not only helps me but also my mom, who's been my main support, trying to help me get where I want to be.
Share a little bit about your background...
I am a 15-year-old Blaxican athlete being raised by a single mom who sacrifices everything for me. She has raised me physically, mentally, & financially on her own. I continue to overcome the stigma of being Black and Mexican, being raised by a single mom, by being on the honor roll, staying out of trouble, and focusing on baseball. There's not much I've had to overcome in life so far, because my mom makes sure I have everything I need, not just what I want. I suppose I had to overcome being without wants, such as material stuff, instead of needs. But I have gained an understanding of what it means to sacrifice, to grind, and to keep going, regardless of the circumstances. She showed me it doesn't matter what we have, but what you do with the circumstances you do have control of. Challenges I have faced as an athlete include being overlooked due to my size and not fitting the typical catcher profile, given my slender frame. However, my ability to outperform for my size is what gets me noticed. I constantly have to check myself mentally because of my size and work harder so my performance outshines my size.
tell us one fun fact about yourself...
really enjoy dancing. If I hear music, you will see me dancing.
What career would you like to do?
I want to be a Professional Baseball Player and be the person my mom is proud of, to show her that all the sacrifices made me into the man she knew I could be.
